LEGO Mindstorms EV3 (31313) - Product Description
With the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 (31313), the sky is the limit and only you're imagination can hold you back. The EV3 is the newest evolution in the extremely popular LEGO mindstorm family of programmable robot. The EV3s brain is a computer-controlled LEGO EV3 Intelligent Brick that takes input from multiple sensors, controls up to four interactive servo motors, and features a microprocessor (ARM9), a pixel monochrome LCD display (100x64), a speaker (8 kHz), and the ability to program tasks according to input specifications. With its cutting edge brain and intuitive software, the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 (31313) is able to speak, feel, see, and move. The LEGO Mindstorms EV3 (31313) is intended for children ages 10 years and up. The EV3 contains small pieces which may be a choking hazard and is not intended for children under three years of age.How it Works
The LEGO Mindstorms EV3 (31313) has a color sensor that allows it to distinguish between six colorswhite, black, yellow, red, green and blueas well as color hues, i.e., brightness vs. lightness and light settings. The EV3 also includes an LED light for illuminating an object. The LEGO Mindstorms EV3 (31313)s redesigned touch sensor and infrared sensor gives the robot depth perception in both centimeters and inches reaching up to 233 cm with a precision of three centimeters which allows it to gauge and avoid obstacles and detect movement. Three identical Servo Motors and a built-in rotation sensor, which measures in one-degree steps, allow you to move the robot with precision. The EV3 has two sensors which it uses to detect touch, bumps and releases. This enables the EV3 to grasp objects or move as directed.Guides and Step-by-Step Tutorials

This lego mindstorms package is such a truly awesome toy. It has a ton of pieces and you can build them into a wide array of robots (it even comes with like 5 suggestions). Building the robot is just the beginning though, once you build it, all you need is a PC or Mac and you can program it to do all kinds of crazy stuff. The setup process was dead simple, and configuring the mindstorms to do what you want was really straightforward. This is top notch stuff, and if you have anyone who's interested in technology this would make a great gift for them and I highly recommend that you give it a shot.
As far as toys go, this is really expensive, but man, is it worth the money. If you or your kids are interested in anything like science, computers, programming, mechanics, architecture, engineering, etc. this is as cool as it gets to help nurture that interest. The LEGO mindstorms are a complete package where you can design, build, and test robot configurations, and then program them to do tasks like moving, or lifting and carrying objects. It's actually incredible how much different stuff you can do with a toy that's basically a robot with some robotic movie parts. This is just really cool, and if you have the money to pick one up either for yourself or someone you know, I definitely think you should do it. How's that for a product review? LOL
This LEGO Mindstorms costs a lot of money, so if you're looking into cheap toys, this is not your best bet. If you do want to spend a little more though, this is ideal. Once you build a robot, your kid will spend literally hundreds of hours configuring it and changing things it can do. It's geared sorta toward kids interested in computers and technology so if that describes your kid then I absolutely think you should consider the Lego Mindstorms package as a toy for that kid.
This is truly a great learning tool for kids who are just starting to get inquisitive about how things like computers and machines work. I got it for my son, who loves playing with regular lego, and he's already used it so much and built so many combos. I have to work with him on the programming side, but it's a great bonding experience and nothing beats when we put a build together and then it ends up doing exactly what we wanted it to do. High Fives go all around the table on those days! :)
