Newborn Baby Essentials

When you’re expecting, it’s sometimes difficult to know exactly what you’ll need immediately after giving birth. This is especially true for first time mothers and fathers who do not yet have the experience to know exactly what having a newborn baby entails. To try and help out, and to point you in the best direction of deals to help you save money, we’ve compiled a list of newborn baby essentials that every family should have for a new birth.

Travel

  • Safety approved infant car seat [examples]
  • Reclining stroller that allows newborn baby to lie completely flat [examples]
  • Sling or Baby Carrier [examples]

Bedtime / Crib Sleeping

  • Approved crib/mattress [examples]
  • A baby monitor [examples]
  • A hands free baby swing [examples]
  • 3 waterproof mattress covers
  • 4 fitted crib sheets
  • 4 light blankets
  • Sleep sack

Health

  • Nail clippers or baby safe scissors just in case the newborn needs a quick clipping
  • Bulb syringe for suctioning mucous
  • Baby thermometer for monitoring temperature and fever medication just in case
  • Eye dropper to administer medicine if needed

Blankets

  • 4 large blankets made with cotton
  • 8 small receiving blankets

Feeding / Nursing

  • Lots of bibs and burp protection pads
  • Breast pump a milk storage containers (if nursing) [examples]
  • Nursing pillow, breast pads, and nursing bras (make sure to get 1 size bigger than your normal size)
  • 8 four-ounce (125 ml) bottles with nipples, 6 eight-ounce (250 ml) bottles with nipples (if using formula)
  • Bottle and nipple brush (if using formula)
  • Thermal bottle carrier

Clothing

  • 2 jackets (1 more if long winter expected)
  • 8 one piece sleeper sets
  • 5 nightgowns (use until chord falls off)
  • 8 undershirts or onesie sets (some short sleeve, some long)
  • 5 pairs of pants
  • 2 hats (to cover the head before hair grows)
  • 6 pairs of socks or booties
  • 2 pair of “no scratch” mittens to stop the infant from scratching his/her face
  • Bunting bag or snowsuit for winter

Bathing

  • 1 plastic infant safe tub
  • 12 infant safe washcloths (not to be used on baby’s bottom)
  • Baby soap and baby shampoo
  • baby soft-bristled hair brush
  • 3 soft, infant sized, hooded towels

Diapers and Cleaning

  • Infant safe laundry detergent
  • 4 dozen cloth or reusable diapers or 2 boexes of disposables
  • 1 diaper pail
  • Changing Pad
  • Baby ointment or barrier cream to prevent rashes
  • Snaps and/or safety pins for reusable diapers
  • Infant safe disposable wipes and soft washcloths
  • 8 waterproof disposable diaper covers

Optional but Useful Items

  • Change table
  • Diaper bag
  • Plastic hangers for closet
  • Car Sun shade to keep car cool when not occupied
  • 2 to 4 pacifiers
  • Rocking Chair
  • Night Light
